  Welcome to the circus! In this course, sailors will explore the exciting world of trapezes and spinnakers through the RS Quest. This is the first step into the world of higher performance sailing where trapezing is a must and flying spinnaker adds exhilarating downwind flair to one's sail.

  Sailors will learn the basics of proper trapezing technique, spinnaker trim and boat handling, special gear care considerations, and effective skipper-crew communication. The RS Quest will provide a very friendly, stable learning platform before sailors step onto the skiffs and catamarans in future courses.

  Prerequisites:

  • be a UBCSC and JSCA club member for the current season
    
  • passed Intermediate or Cat 1 Sailing with UBC Sailing 
    
  • sailed at least 1 season at intermediate level (30+ h on Laser)
  • wetsuit: during lessons you will spend a lot more time in the water than you would in a regular relaxed sail

  Passing criteria (as per the A1 checklist):

  • sound judgement with regards to equipment care, crew experience and gear, weather and sea conditions

  • rigging/derigging, safe handling on the boat yard and on the water, well-controlled launch and landing
  • balance and speed control at all times with and without trapezing, with and without spinnaker, basic maneuvers including heave-to
  • emergency maneuvers such as man overboard, capsize recovery, spinnaker issues
  • time and conditions permitting, rudderless and backwards sailing

• Sail and Climb at Lighthouse Park - VOC Collab

  This is a collaboration between the UBC Sailing Club and Varsity Outdoor club where we bring our respective water and rock skills to the table. We use our sailing kills to propel us to Lighthouse for some top roping at Juniper Point.

  Schedule:

  We will have a morning group and an afternoon group. Each group drives one way and sails one way.

  Morning Group: 

  9am:  Meet at at JSCA and drive to Lighthouse park

  10am - 12:30pm: Climb at Juniper point

  1pm: Meet at switch over spot and sail back to JSCA on Quests

  Afternoon Group

  11am: Meet at JSCA to rig Quests

  12pm: Sail to lighthouse park 

  1pm: Arrive at switch over spot and have morning group take over your boat

  1pm-3:30pm: Climbing at Juniper point

  4pm: Drive back home

  Registration:

  Please sign up for either the morning or afternoon group. If we run out of room, please sign up for the wait list

  You have to register as a social member in order to sign up for this event.

  Gear:

  If you dont have climbing gear, this can be borrowed from the VOC during gear hours at their club room in the AMS nest at UBC. We will send out an email with gear requirements and what to bring in the next week.

  It may not be the Grand Line, but the UBC Sailing Club is going on an adventure to... UBC! Join us on Sunday September 21st on a trip just past the edge of our sailing boundary to Wreck Beach! This trip is open to all members who are certified on beginner sailing or higher, as well as any certified kayakers. Members are also welcome to join us by landship or on foot!
  This time we will have to start earlier to time the tides properly and avoid the day of the long boat attendees.
