Every sailor should know at least 5 knots. We’re going to teach you 7! We’ll focus on the knots that are most useful on the boats we have, but a couple of these are also great for camping, climbing, and showing off to your friends.

This event will take place at the Jericho Sailing Centre, and is open to all members, including social members. We will provide you with rope and some light snacks.

Curious about sailing? Want to see a new side of Vancouver and make the most of the beautiful, vast ocean at our doorstep? Come experience the wind in your sails at our UBC Try Sailing event on Saturday, May 23rd from 12:ooH to 16:00H at the Jericho Sailing Centre!

Whether you've never set foot on a boat or you're just looking to get back on the water, this is the perfect (FREE!) opportunity to get your feet wet and try dinghy sailing with experienced members of the UBC Sailing Club. No previous experience required--open to UBC students and the general public!

You will have the chance to sail aboard our RS Quest or Hobie 16 boats with seasoned club sailors, tour the UBC club facilities and learn about our membership options and diverse fleets (including windsurfers, kayaks, SUPs)! This event coincides with the Jericho Sailing Centre's Open House, so you will also be immersed in our vibrant community of water sport-enthusiasts and volunteers, see the Jericho Rescue boats in action, and receive member-discounts at the Galley Patio & Grill!

    IMPORTANT NOTES:
-This event is FREE but early registration is recommended to guarantee a spot. Walk-ins may be accommodated, if space allows.

-All participants must sign our liability waiver upon check-in at our club booth.

-You will be wearing a club PFD, but all participants must know how to swim.

-Be prepared to get wet! Wear clothing that will keep you warm and non-marking shoes that you're ok wearing in the ocean. It's also a good idea to bring a towel and/or change of clothing for after.

Registrants must be at least 18 years old. The club reserves its right to suspend on-water activities to ensure the safety of all participants, depending on weather conditions.

In addition to independent practice, we may organize the following activities depending on participants’ skill levels and wind conditions:

Mini Races (L1 and above): If wind conditions and skill levels are suitable, we may run a short race from our usual launch area, around a marker, and back.

Short Trips (L2 and above): Conditions permitting, we may organize a short trip to a nearby beach by the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club (during easterly winds) or head toward Locarno Beach, just west of the Jericho Pier (during westerly winds).

    Weather & Updates

Wind Conditions: If weather conditions are unfavorable (wind is too light or too strong), we will post a status update on Discord the night before the session. Please keep an eye on the channel for the latest news!

Enjoy a relaxing "Full Moon Friday" evening paddle featuring stunning views of the downtown Vancouver skyline. Experience the sky turning a vibrant orange as the sun sets directly into the sea.

    Evening Schedule

6:30pm Gear setup and kayak preparation.

7:00pm Launch from Jericho, paddling East.

7:45pm-8:15pm Raft up near blue house (or land on Linnea beach, see pic from last year). Please bring your own snacks & non-alcoholic drinks!

8:15pm Start paddle back toward Jericho, enjoying the sunset on the water.

9:00pm Return to Jericho before sunset at 9:06pm (May 29)

Post-Trip Practice: If you wish to stay on the water near Jericho after sunset—for a short paddling or to practice capsize recoveries and rolling—you are welcome to do so. However, please note that Navigation Lights are mandatory for paddling after sunset.

Safety Note: This is a self-guided group paddle; no motorboats or coach boats will be accompanying the trip.
