If you are a UBC student and want to become a part of the UBCSC community but the fees are just more than you can afford right now you can apply for a discounted membership. This membership option is for people who are struggling financially and have difficulty affording recreational activities. We only have a handful of discounted memberships so we ask you only apply through this route if there is no other way you could afford joining the club.
Historically, sailing has been dominated by white cisgender men and we want to do a better job of welcoming underrepresented populations and make this Club a safe community for everyone. With this in mind, we especially encourage women, BIPOC and queer folks to apply.
If you would like to register for a discounted membership please email nina.bernhardt@ubcsailing.org and answer/provide the following:
What's exciting to you about the club and joining this community?
How is cost a barrier and how would a free membership help you?
Please send one supporting document illustrating need based financial support you are receiving and briefly explain the document
Examples include, but are not limited to, AMS Hardship subsidy, student bursary, registration at a food bank, Subsidized Housing (if you are unsure about your documentation, please email Nina to discuss it and we will design a solution together)
You will then be invited to a meeting where we help you through the registration process and answer any questions you may have. Only Nina, Rear Commodore, and Federico, Club Treasurer, will have access to your application, documents and answers to the above questions.
