Curious about sailing? Want to see a new side of Vancouver and make the most of the beautiful, vast ocean at our doorstep? Come experience the wind in your sails at our UBC Try Sailing event on Sunday, August 9th from 12:00H to 16:00H at the Jericho Sailing Centre!
Whether you've never set foot on a boat or you're just looking to get back on the water, this is the perfect opportunity to get your feet wet and try dinghy sailing with experienced members of the UBC Sailing Club. No previous experience required--open to UBC students (Social Membership required) and the General Public!
You will have the chance to sail aboard our RS Quest or Hobie 16 boats with seasoned club sailors, tour the UBC club facilities and learn about our membership options and diverse fleets (including windsurfers, kayaks, SUPs)! After your sail, join us for ice cream by the ocean!
IMPORTANT NOTES:
-Participants must be able to swim! We will do our best to avoid capsizing, but that is part of dinghy sailing so there is always a chance you will be in the water. Personal floatation devices (PFDs) will be provided.
-Be prepared to get wet! Wear clothing that will keep you warm and non-marking shoes that you're ok wearing in the ocean. It's also a good idea to bring a towel and/or change of clothing for after.
-We will have storage bins for your gear on shore, but UBCSC does not accept responsibility for lost or stolen items so please leave your most valuable possessions at home. Jericho Sailing Centre has a limited number of day-use lockers available (bring your own lock if you wish to use these).
Registrants must be at least 18 years old. The club reserves its right to suspend on-water activities to ensure the safety of all participants, depending on weather conditions.
By participating in the 2026 UBCSC Try Sailing, attendees automatically grant to the UBC Sailing Club the right, in perpetuity, to make, use, and show, at their discretion, any photography, audio and video recordings, and other reproductions of them made at the venue or on the water from the time of their arrival at the venue, until their final departure, without compensation.
