Why donate?

Your donation will help us renew our fleet faster, improving the club for all members.

During the 2020-2021 season, the Club surveyed members to improve the fleet so that it offers members a better experience. A few needs arose:

  • Newer boats to reduce downtime and offer an overall better sailing experience

  • Capable yet comfortable beginner boats enjoyed by many members outside of lessons

  • Boats that can accommodate more passengers

  • Skills such as trapeze, reefing, spinnaker, accessible earlier than advanced lessons

  • Lower storage and maintenance costs, better race performance through recent hulls

  • High-performance fleet adjusted to reflect its usage and reduce unnecessary costs

A subcommittee researched and evaluated options. The fleet renewal plan was approved by an overwhelming majority of our UBC student members through a vote in November 2020.

Under that 5-year plan:

  • Flying Juniors are replaced by RS Quests, a more comfortable and versatile beginner boat that also makes additional skills (trapeze, spinnaker) more accessible, and can hold up to 6 people
  • the Laser fleet, the most used one outside of training, is going to be upgraded then kept in better condition
  • the Vanguard fleet is going to be adjusted based on hull condition, then based on usage
  • the high-performance fleet will be reduced and refreshed, then adjusted based on usage

In addition to this sailboat plans, the Club will also upgrade its kayak, windsurfing and SUP gear.

With all our equipment in improving condition, our members will get to spend more time having fun on the water.

During the 2021-2022 season, first steps were taken in that direction:
- Sold: 2 old Lasers, 1 Vanguard, 1 RS500, 1 Flying Junior
- Bought: 2 new Lasers (+ new sails & tillers), 1 RS Quest

During the 2022-2023 season, more progress:
- Sold: 5 Flying Junior (2 remain for sale if you know anyone interested)
- Bought: 5 RS Quest (including one with trapeze, gennaker, masthead float)
- Bought: 4.7 rig for Laser (mast base and sail)
- Bought: 2 new beginner windsurfing boards that can be used as SUP
- Bought: 2 new fiberglass kayaks (1 double, 1 single)

What/how can I donate?

You may donate money through the form below.

If you would like to donate a boat for us to use or to sell to raise money, please email us at hello@ubcsailing.org.

We are limited by the cost and space of storage at the Jericho Sailing Centre, and we only have the elements to maintain the types of boats our club already operates. As such, we may or may not be able to keep and sail a boat if you donate it to us.
