Ready for Intermediate - Skills test with JB - Jul 7

The goal of this test on the RS Quest is to determine if you have a sufficient level to join an Intermediate course on the Laser.

An easy way to self-assess: you should be able to comfortably take a non-sailing guest on the Quest in 10-15 kt winds, smoothly lead and complete all maneuvers in the Beginner Sailing Syllabus.

Prerequisites:

• registered as a UBC Sailing Club member for the current season
• registered as a JSCA member for the current season
• previously achieved our Beginner level
• suitable clothing for the conditions

Course content:

- Inspection of Quest rigging (1 boat for each two registrants, arrive early so that you are changed and rigged when the session starts)
- Knowledge assessment: main right-of-way rules, how to tell wind direction from the boat itself, considerations for launching and landing if the wind is onshore, offshore, sideshore
- For each registrant as skipper, smooth, efficient and precise leading and execution of the following (assume your crew is not knowledgeable):

• boatyard and ramp handling
• launch
• efficient setting of close haul, beam reach, broad reach
• clean tacks, only minimal over or under turning
• stable gybes, only minimal over or under turning
• heave-to
• man overboard recovery
• capsize recovery
• well-controlled landing at a small target area of the beach, no running aground

- In addition to that, it is necessary to display good seamanship, care of equipment, consideration for other JSCA and club members, and understanding of club rules and policies.
