Prerequisites:

  • registered as a JSCA member for the current season
  • registered as a UBC Sailing Club member for the current season
  • able to swim
  • wetsuit
  • 5-6 day half or full day trips following the introduction lesson or equivalent experience

  • Can perform a simple assisted and solo re-entry in calm conditions.

  • Can execute a controlled wet exit in calm conditions.

Note: If the class does not reach the minimum required number of registrants, we will cancel the class to avoid running it at a financial loss to the club. You will be notified of a canceled class about 24 hours before the start of the first session.

This 6-day course covers material that will help you safely plan and enjoy kayaking trips, balancing dry land instruction with on-water skill development. It follows the curriculum of Paddle Canada Level 1. In addition, we will cover the basics of rolling.

  • Cold issues and sun safety

  • Impact of kayakers on the environment

  • Vehicle boat tie down

  • Kayaking community and resources

Paddling skills

  • Launching and landing
  • Forward and reverse strokes
  • Stopping
  • Sweep stroke
  • Draw stroke
  • Low brace
  • Stern rudder
  • Boat edging and dynamic stroke combinations

Re-entry skills

  • Self-rescue techniques (paddle float, stern climb, cowboy/girl entry)
  • Assisted rescue techniques (heel hook/T, bow presentation, scoop, stirrup, hand of God, etc)
  • Towing skills (contact, tow-line)

Rolling 

  • Fundamentals of rolling
  • C-to-C or sweep roll
  • Introduction to Greenland rolls
