Prerequisites:

  • be a UBCSC and JSCA club member for the current season
  • have been awarded "ready for A1/C1" by an instructor, for instance during a half-day skill test session, or have previously achieved our Adv 1 certification
  • wetsuit: during lessons you will spend a lot more time in the water than you would in a regular relaxed sail

Passing criteria (as per the A1 checklist):

  • sound judgement with regards to equipment care, crew experience and gear, weather and sea conditions

  • rigging/derigging, safe handling on the boat yard and on the water, well-controlled launch and landing
  • balance and speed control at all times with and without trapezing, with and without spinnaker, basic maneuvers including heave-to
  • emergency maneuvers such as man overboard, capsize recovery, spinnaker issues
  • time and conditions permitting, rudderless and backwards sailing

The Adv 1 course introduces members to trapeze and spinnaker on our RS Quest. The RS Quest makes for a good introduction to trapeze and spinnaker sailing as it is uncomplicated and stable, yet has a lot buoyancy allowing it to pick up enough speed under spinnaker to be exciting.
The main handling difficulties when moving up from intermediate monohulls are:
- when a crew is trapezing, the helm has to work more to maintain boat balance while helming properly
- spinnaker sailing brings extra lines/clutter in the cockpit, and more instability; this is magnified when turning more upwind; intentional capsize may be needed to avoid tearing a spinnaker that was not doused smoothly
