The aim of this course is to give competent sailors with little recent experience the confidence to get back on the water safely. For previously RS500- or F18-certified sailors, it is also an opportunity to get introduced to spinnaker sailing on the RS Quest.

If you feel really rusty and would like a more thorough course to return on the water, we encourage you to register for a skill test session to assess which full course you would qualify for.

Prerequisites:

  • registered as a UBC Sailing Club member for the 2023-2024 or 2024-2025 season
  • registered as a JSCA member for the 2023-2024 or 2024-2025 season
  • previously passed our Advanced 1 or Catamaran 1 course
  • wetsuit and suitable clothing for the conditions

Note: If this class is full, you are welcome to join our waitlist on the Signal app groups chats (login required).

Course content:
- Spinnaker on RS Quest, and Hobie 16 rigging review
- Review of procedures: down the ramp, launching, landing, angle of tack considerations for Hobie 16
- Spin hoisting and dousing, sail care considerations
- Basic handling: sail trim on all points of sail, tacking, gybing (with spin as needed)
- Safety: capsize recovery (water bag as needed) man overboard

If you are unsure if this is the right class for you, feel free to contact our head instructor at headinstructor@ubcsailing.org.
