This session is the skills test to qualify for the Cat 1 class running Jun 3-11

Prerequisites:

  • proficient at intermediate level, double-handed
    • show up early, get changed, and rig a Vanguard in time for the start of the first session, which will be a skill test to assess that your level is sufficient for the course; you will need to demonstrate proficiency with all of the following as skipper, in up to 15kt wind:
      - care with equipment
      - situational awareness on and off the water
      - rigging
      - ramp handling
      - beach handling
      - launching
      - sailing upwind and downwind efficiently
      - precise handling including sail trim in all points of sail, particularly close hauled
      - controlled tacks and gybes with clean exits and an emphasis on heading control
      - capsize recovery
      - simulated man overboard recovery
  • wetsuit
  • the Hobie 16 is a wet boat, and during lessons you will spend a lot more time in the water than you would in a regular relaxed sail

In the past, some members who did not have the right skill level joined the Cat 1 class, which resulted in a bad experience for everyone:

- the unprepared members spent too much time drifting downwind and capsized, monopolizing instructor time and jeopardizing the safety of the other boats, and could not achieve a sufficient skill level during the class

- the members who were prepared received less feedback from their instructor than should have been, and were mostly on their own on the water when the instructor had to hover near the boat that was struggling way downwind or capsized

For that reason, the first session will be a skill test on Vanguard; the 4 who perform best will continue in the Cat 1 class that same afternoon if 4 have the right level (we only have 2 cats currently available for lessons so it has to be a 4-memberclass). For the others, Clément will give you his assessment: you may already have the level to get in the class on the next session, or you will be told what requires work so that you don't struggle
