SUP Orientation ($30)

Prerequisites:
- wetsuit
- ability to swim

Stand-up paddleboarding (or SUPing) is a great balance practice, a core workout and a way to get on the water when the wind is too light for sailing.  SUP has gained huge popularity over the past decade. SUPers can participate in many events and paddle evenings at Jericho.

This short and basic lesson aims to quickly grant you access to the gear. The lesson will cover:

  • Launching and landing safely

  • Safe storage and care of equipment

  • Paddling and steering technique

  • Self-rescue

  • Safety precautions and obstacles when out on the water

The class will involve a basic test where you launch and land your board safely and move from a specific point on the shore, out to one of the 5-knot buoys, and back to the exact spot where you started. To pass the course the instructor must feel confident in your ability to:

  • Take proper care of the equipment in a safe manner.

  • Show awareness of your surroundings on the water, avoid obstacles and stay a safe distance from shore.

  • Know when the conditions are right for your skill level.

  • Be able to self rescue back to shore at any point without assistance.

Having good balance and core strength will help you to do well in this course.  Experience in yoga, snowboarding, surfing or martial arts, and core strengthening exercises will all help (but are not requirements).

Lesson Hours: 1.5
