Prerequisites:

  • be a UBCSC and JSCA club member for the current season
  • have been awarded "ready for C2" by an instructor, for instance during a half-day skill test session, or have previously achieved our Cat 2 certification
  • wetsuit:  during lessons you will spend a lot more time in the water than you would in a regular relaxed sail

Passing criteria (as per the C2 checklist):

  • sound judgement with regards to equipment care, crew experience and gear, weather and sea conditions

  • rigging/derigging, safe handling on the boat yard and on the water, well-controlled launch and landing
  • balance and speed control at all times with and without trapezing, with and without spinnaker, basic maneuversemergency maneuvers such as man overboard, capsize recovery in light winds with the help of a waterbag
  • time and conditions permitting, rudderless and backwards sailing

The Cat 2 course introduces members to spinnaker sailing on our F18. Students learn to handle a bigger, faster catamaran. The F18 makes for an exhilarating ride, with lighter control at the rudder, self-tacking jib, more buoyancy than a Hobie 16 making it able to pierce through smaller waves, and a powerful sail plan especially under spinnaker.
The main handling difficulties when moving up from the Hobie 16:
- bigger, faster boat, with different tasks for helm and crew
- spinnaker handling brings more lines on the trampoline, and requires smoother handling downwind
