Catamaran 1 (C1) – Weekdays & Weekend (5 Sep 2026)

The Cat 1 course introduces members to multihull sailing on our Hobie 16s. Students learn the basics of sailing a catamaran while also being introduced to trapezing. The Hobie 16 makes for a fun introduction to catamaran sailing as it picks up good speed but is rather uncomplicated compared to our other catamarans.

The main handling difficulties when moving up from intermediate monohulls are:

Sailing upwind: tacks are slower and through a larger angle; one will easily end up in irons if not properly set close hauled before the tack, or mishandling the jib
The boat is stable and will keep sailing away in case of a man overboard
Capsize recovery requires proper technique in higher winds, and can be extremely difficult especially for lighter crew in very light winds

Prerequisites:

Be a UBCSC and JSCA club member for the current season
Have intermediate certification
Wetsuit: the Hobie 16 is a wet boat; during lessons you will spend a lot more time in the water than you would in a regular relaxed sail

Passing criteria (as per the C1 checklist):

Sound judgement with regards to equipment care, crew experience and gear, weather and sea conditions
Rigging/derigging, safe handling on the boat yard and on the water, well-controlled launch and landing
Balance and speed control at all times with and without trapezing, basic maneuvers including heave-to
Emergency maneuvers such as man overboard, capsize recovery in light winds with the help of a waterbag

Format: Thu 18:00–21:00 | Fri 17:00–21:00 | Sat/Sun 09:00–17:00

Beginner Sailing (Weekdays & Weekend) (5 Sep 2026)

If you have never been on a boat before or you have, but are unsure of your skills, this is the place to start. The aim of this class is to give you access to our double-handed beginner boat, the RS Quest. The instructor will take you from basic theory to out on the water over the duration of this course. It is meant to be a fun and exciting journey.

Before registering, pay close attention to the prerequisites, passing criteria, and how to prepare.

Please come ~15 minutes early on day 2 onwards to change and rig the boats before class begins. If you are unsure if this is the right class for you, feel free to contact our head instructor at headinstructor@ubcsailing.org.

The aim of this class is to get you out on the water ASAP. Learn basic handling of equipment, self-rescue and the mechanics of moving across the water on a board. Get ready to get wet, swim, carry, launch and maneuver equipment in the water while you learn:

How to read conditions
Safety precautions and obstacles
Launch and land safely
Safe storage, selection, management and care of equipment
Uphauling and getting going
Steering, points of sail, right of way
Turning (tacking)
Self-rescue

For you to pass the course, your instructor must feel confident in your ability to:

Take proper care of the equipment in a safe manner
Know club procedures and policies including beginner windsurfing zone, maximum wind speeds for beginner windsurfing, and signing out and returning gear at Jericho.
Read the wind and currents and be able to self-rescue back to shore at any point.
Safely launch and show awareness of your surroundings on the water, avoid obstacles and stay within the 5kt zone at all times.

We have a tight schedule and a lot of great information to cover over the 3 days. Arriving fully ready before the start time will ensure you get the absolute most out of your lessons! If you unable to attend in one of the day, you may want to sign up another class that fit your schedule. Actual lesson starting time may be adjusted subject to Wind condition and availability.

Intermediate Windsurfing L2 with Clément (9 Sep 2026)

at least 10 times on the water in a range of conditions after completing beginner windsurfing
ability to sail upwind efficiently using a centreboard
wetsuit

If the class does not reach the minimum required number of registrants, we will cancel the class to avoid running it at a financial loss to the club. You will be notified of a canceled class about 24 hours before the start of the first session.

Intermediate windsurfing lessons aim to help you sail faster, more efficiently, and to maneuver and turn confidently on the water. This course covers:

Gybe and (review of) tack.
Selecting appropriate windsurfing boards and sails for the conditions, including an introduction to shortboards without a centreboard.
Club procedures and policies including intermediate windsurfing zone, maximum wind speeds for intermediate windsurfing, signing out, managing, and returning gear at Jericho.
Using the harness (saves your arms).
Beach start (helps prepare you to learn water starts).

To pass the course, your instructor must feel confident in your ability to do the following:

Take proper care of the lighter and more delicate intermediate equipment in a safe manner, including thorough inspection before and after use.
Know right-of-way, show awareness of your surroundings on the water, avoid obstacles and stay within the intermediate area.

Racing and Foiling - Advanced Intermediate L2.5 Windsurfing with Adam (9 Sep 2026)

ability to sail upwind with and without a centreboard

Advanced Intermediate L2.5 windsurfing lessons aim to introduce you to racing and foiling, helping you sail faster and more efficiently on smaller boards, and to prepare you for participating in Jericho races. This course covers:

Introductory theory on windsurfing, racing, and foiling.
Review of shortboard sailing without a centreboard.
Race practice on Mistral longboards.
Foil practice on beginner Yalla boards.
Club procedures and policies including L2.5 windsurfing zone, maximum wind speeds for L2.5 windsurfing, signing out and returning gear at Jericho, inspecting and reporting damage.

To pass the course, your instructor must feel confident in your ability to do the following:

Demonstrate basic understanding of racing rules and how to safely handle foiling equipment.
Able to sail upwind on a shortboard without a centreboard and sail upwind very efficiently on a longboard with a centreboard.
Take proper care of the lighter and more delicate L2.5 equipment in a safe manner, including thorough inspection before and after use.
Know right-of-way, show awareness of your surroundings on the water, avoid obstacles and stay within the L2.5 area.
Ready to participate in Jericho races on a Tahe/Bic Breeze longboard.
Select appropriate gear for the conditions.
Be able to self-rescue back to shore at any point.

For you to pass this course, your instructor must see that you can demonstrate all of the above and they must feel confident that you can safely launch and return to shore at Jericho.

Conditions and skill-level permitting, we may join the Sunday race as a windsurfing fleet. This will be at the discretion of your instructor.

Intermediate sailing is aimed at sailors who have become proficient at sailing basics in our beginner fleet and are looking to take the next step. Sailing the Laser, students will develop boat handling and sail trim skillsets geared towards racing, higher wind sailing, and progression onto skiffs and catamarans.

Learn sailboat racing basics, so that you can take part in the races hosted by Jericho on Tuesday evenings and Sunday afternoons

To pass the course:

You can rig, de-rig, and take good care of the equipment from the beginning to the end of your session
You are in control at all times and do not endanger yourself or others, from launching to racing close to other boats to landing
You demonstrate competent control of the boat, including capsize recovery, sail fanning in no wind, rudderless steering in light wind
You have a good sense of the weather and sea conditions for your skill level
