Maybe kayaking is your passion, or a no-wind alternative, or possibly a cross-training fitness program. Maybe you even never thought of kayaking before and you want to join the UBC sailing club to discover it. Kayaking is a fantastic way to explore Vancouver’s shoreline (Spanish banks, Stanley Park, Granville Island), and beyond. The BC coast has some world class kayak touring and the huge network of campgrounds and parks offers endless possibilities. It is an amazing way of discovering the coast and its incredible wildlife.
Among the numerous possible destinations for overnight trips are Desolation Sound, Clayoquot sound, the Broken Islands Group / Dear Group, the Gulf Island, and many more.
We are trying to promote both day trips around English bay, as well as overnight, longer trips. As for any other boats of the fleet, you will need to take a course and learn the safety basics that will keep you safe out there. If you have some previous kayaking experience, you also can take a proficiency test. For longer trips, you will have first to join an organized trip before being able to organize trips yourself. We have some policy that describe more precisely the rules that apply to using the kayaks of the club. The rule’s book can be found (here). A more detailed section on the courses can be found in the lesson section.
The UBC sailing club has a fleet of 4 single fibreglass kayaks, one double fibreglass kayak, as well as numerous plastics ones (single and doubles) to enjoy the shoreline.
