Tsunami News + Work Hour Opportunities

Meet the Steering Committee: Emilie

Hello everyone,

First let me say that we hope everyone is enjoying their summer and spending lots of time out on the water! We are continuing to monitor how the COVID-19 situation progresses and making sure that we have appropriate policies in place to keep our members safe.

Let me tell you a little about myself. I’m a fourth year Behavioural Neuroscience student minoring in Math at UBC. I joined the UBC sailing club because my mom has always told me how much she’s loved sailing when she was younger. After taking my first beginner lesson I absolutely fell in love with sailing and I also met one of my bestest friends, Micki. Now I’m vice-president and this club has a special place in my heart. I’ll be around Jericho a lot this summer because I’m working with the Disabled Sailing Association. Hopefully I’ll see you around.

Safety Reminder – Powerboats when Towing have Right of Way

Remember to steer clear of tow boats and their tow line! This includes rescue boats from Jericho. Last weekend one of our Vanguard was on a collision course with a Jericho Rescue boat while they had a boat under tow. The Jericho Rescue team had to go to great length to make the Vanguard change its course.

As a reminder, it is illegal and extremely dangerous to sail/paddle/row, or otherwise navigate, between a tug and its tow. It is exceptionally rare to see a tug without a tow in our vicinity. A tow may be as much as 750M behind which has fooled some people. If you see a tug, look for a tow. Always yield the right of way to commercial vessels and boats with fishing equipment deployed.

Responsibility for avoiding collisions is shared by everyone using the waterway. Common sense must be used along with alertness and caution.

Free Intermediate Sailing Refresher Class – July 7, 2020

Join us for a free online intermediate-level sailing theory lesson on July 7, from 6 – 8 PM. We’ll cover most of the content normally covered on land during our intermediate lessons. Certified intermediates wanting a refresher or beginner sailors wanting a head start on their next lesson are welcome. Meet us at 6 PM via this zoom link.

For a refresher on rigging a Laser, take a look at our UBC Sailing Laser Rigging How-to video on YouTube.

Volunteers Needed – Open House

Are you a passionate member and in need of some work hours?  Sign up as a volunteer for our Open House on July 10th or July 11th. We are looking for some more people to give a tour of the Club, let prospective members know how the Club works and answer any questions that they may have.

Volunteers Needed – Graduate Student Fair

UBC is hosting a virtual Campus Resources and Student Activity Fair to introduce new graduate students to the many resources and student groups available at UBC. We want the UBC Sailing Club to be a part of this and are looking for 2 volunteers to help represent the Club at this fair. This involves writing a club description (~150 words) and creating a short video (2-3 minutes) that provides an overview of our Club. This would be due on July 17th.

Interested? Send an email to  hello@ubcsailing.org and we’ll get back to you with more information.

Work Hours Submission Form

Completed some work hours? We’ve created a Google Form to collect everyone’s work hours and make sure we are accurately keeping track of all of your volunteer work.

Lessons starting soon!

Lessons officially start this upcoming week! Every lesson has been adapted to meet physical distancing guidelines and ensure the safety of our students, instructors and the Jericho community. Lessons will look a bit different this year with fewer students and everyone wearing face masks, but we are extremely pleased that we can get more people on the water and learning new skills!

Unfortunately, at this time we cannot run beginner sailing lessons as our double-handed boats do not follow physical distancing guidelines.

We are happy to offer these lessons:

  • Intermediate sailing
  • Beginner kayaking
  • Beginner and intermediate windsurfing
  • SUP (stand-up paddling)

Lesson offerings for June and July are posted in the lessons calendar.  We will continue to add more lessons for the season and update the calendar over the next few weeks. Due to smaller classes we encourage you to sign up fast before spots run out!

COVID Guidelines

Please read our Covid-19 Guidelines to see what we are doing as a Club to ensure safe operations, and to learn how to practice physical distancing while using the Club facilities and watercraft.

We look forward to seeing new and old members around Jericho and saying hello from a 2 meter distance!

Sincerely,

Your Steering Committee
