Full UBC Sailing Club membership is open to students and general community members.  Follow these steps to join the club and get on the water with us.

1. Register and pay for UBC Sailing Club membership

  • Our club membership season runs April 1 to March 31. New members who join between September and March have their club membership extended until March 31 of the following season.
  • For student pricing, submit your current UBC student number during registration. At any point in the season, you may be asked for Proof of Enrollment at the time of registration.

Note: Falsely claiming to be a student during the membership application causes financial harm to our volunteer-run club and shows disregard to all other members. In failing to provide Proof of Enrollment in a timely manner when requested, a member resigns their membership, forfeits their membership fee and work deposit, and will be subject to other penalties (such as additional financial penalties and/or the inability to rejoin the club for a certain duration) as seen fit by the Steering Committee.

2. Sign the e-waiver that is emailed to the address you used to register on the website. If you do not see the e-waiver in your inbox, check your junk folder. It may take up to an hour to arrive. Once you sign this waiver your membership will be processed and approved.

3. Register and pay for Jericho Sailing Centre Association (JSCA) membership (note for families: JSCA offers family pricing and junior pricing for their membership)

  • Remember to pick up your JSCA member card before your first lesson.
4. Get certified to access a fleet by:
  • signing up for lessons (not that they fill up quickly at the beginning of the season, so you may want to register ASAP if your goal is to complete one and have most of the summer on the water),
  • getting matched with a mentor (we encourage you to use our Forum for that),
  • or applying for a proficiency exam (if you have prior sailing or kayaking experience).

After you get certified on a fleet, enjoy unlimited access!  Your JSCA membership card grants you access to the club room for that fleet.

Gaining Access to Fleets (Full members only)

      Lessons & Mentoring

Members who are new to sailing, kayaking, windsurfing or paddleboarding, must take beginner lessons before using our fleets. We offer many beginner lessons throughout the spring and summer. You can sign up for lessons during the registration process or at any point afterwards by checking our lessons calendar.

We also have a mentoring program that allows you to progress on a craft through one-on-one learning from another member.

      Proficiency Exams

Members with previous experience sailing or kayaking, may take a proficiency exam to access a fleet instead of lessons.  An instructor will ask you to demonstrate certain skills on the water and determine if you have the required ability to get certified on our fleet.

      Card Access

After passing a lesson, mentoring checklist, or proficiency exam you are allowed to access club rooms and take out that fleet and the corresponding "lower level fleets". For example, if you pass the Advanced 1 sailing proficiency exam, you may use our intermediate and beginner boats as well. Before you can use any equipment you need to record your Jericho card number in your UBC Sailing Club account. This is very important as your Jericho card gives you access to our different equipment rooms. Once certified, you have unlimited access to the equipment and may take it out as many times as you wish, free of charge.
